Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple scored twice in the fourth quarter to rally past Villanova 3-2 on a rainy afternoon at Howarth Field.
The Owls notched the day's first goal three minutes into the contest. Nienke Oerlemans was credited with the goal, her fourth of the season.
That lead would remain intact for the rest of the first half. Temple owned a 5-2 advantage in shots and 3-2 edge in corners. Villanova's
Jordan McGinley made two saves for the Wildcats over the first 30 minutes.
The Wildcats changed the tenor of the game early in the third period.
Meghan Mitchell converted a feed from
Amanda Middleman at 33:27 to deadlock matters at one.
A scant 59 seconds later, Villanova's pressure gave the Wildcats a penalty stroke. Sabine De Ruijter converted at 34:27 to give Nova its first lead of the day.
Villanova maintained that lead through the third quarter into the early minutes of the fourth quarter before a pivotal sequence. Temple was credited with a goal after a feed in from the left side was re-directed past McGinley with 10:30 to play in the period. The officials reviewed the video of the sequence to see if the ball had been kicked into the goal before ultimately concluding the goal would stand.
The game was tied headed into the final 10 minutes.
Temple notched the game-winner, however, at 52:23. The Wildcats pressed forward in an effort to tie the game but were unable to score again. The final score was 3-2.
Villanova concludes the regular season at 4-10 overall, 3-9 in the BIG EAST.
