SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—Villanova (6-3) won two doubles matches and the No. 2 singles match in its final outing of the regular season against Seton Hall (1-7) at the Campus Courts at Ivy Hill Park on Sunday afternoon. The 4-0 team victory for the Wildcats was the team's final tune-up before heading to the BIG EAST Championships which begin later this week.
Junior
Annalise Klopfer (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and senior
Claudia Althans (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) were 6-4 winners over Arina Gumerova and Minja Gligic in the No. 1 doubles match, while junior
Sabina Grigorian (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman
Rose Kenny (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied a 6-4 win in the No. 2 doubles match against Aina Plana Ventosa and Hiba El Khalifi. The third doubles match was awarded to sophomores
Taylor Gould (Los Altos, Calif.) and
Caitlin Fisher (Cincinnati, Ohio) by default.
Althans played Gligic in the No. 2 singles match and won every game in a 6-0, 6-0 decision which ran her season record to 6-3 in the second spot in the lineup. Two other singles matches were awarded to Villanova by default, with Grigorian (No. 5 singles) and Gould (No. 6 singles) being credited with victories.
Three other matches were underway when the team competition ended. Klopfer faced Gumerova at No. 1 singles and won the first set 6-3. Fisher and Ventosa were tied at 6-6 in their opening set at No. 3 singles, while Kenny trailed her No. 4 singles match against El Khalifi by a 6-2, 2-1 count.
Competition begins at the BIG EAST Championships on Thursday in Cayce, S.C.
