CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Villanova wrapped up competition at the two-day Virginia Challenge with three runners recording personal best times in the 800 meters at Lannigan Field on Saturday afternoon. The trio of sophomore
Madison Martinez (Gahanna, Ohio), sophomore
Brynne Sumner (Canton, Ga.) and fifth-year senior
Amari Onque-Shabazz (Plainfield, N.J.) established top times in the 800 meters and senior
McKenna Keegan (West Grove, Pa.) was the runner-up in the event with a time of 2:04.22.
Keegan continued her strong outdoor season with the second place finish in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:04.22 is the second-fastest of her career, trailing only the PR of 2:03.56 she recorded at the Raleigh Relays last month. Martinez came in ninth out of 47 competitors on Saturday with a time of 2:06.64, while Sumner posted a time of 2:06.86 and Onque-Shabazz recorded a time of 2:07.39.
The quartet of 800 meters runners also teamed up to run the 4x400 meter relay later on Saturday and they recorded a time of 3:39.99 to finish third out of seven teams in the relay. Onque-Shabazz and Martinez ran the first two legs of the relay, Sumner recorded a split of 54.92 on the third leg of the race and Keegan anchored with a split of 54.32 over the final 400 meters.
The other individual running events on Saturday's event schedule were the 100 meter hurdles, the 200 meters and the 400 meter hurdles. Redshirt freshman
Jane Livingston (Lancaster, Pa.) came in second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.11, while junior
Jada Thomas (Kingston, Jamaica) was sixth in 14.47 and senior
Sarah Jones (Sewell, N.J.) came in 11
th with a time of 14.89. Thomas also posted a time of 25.51 in the 200 meters, while senior
Trudy-Ann Williamson (Kingston, Jamaica) recorded a time of 25.17 in that race. Fifth-year senior
Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) came in sixth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:01.32.
In the throwing events, graduate students
Grayce French (Ridgeland, S.C.) and
Jul Thomson (Otterville, Ont.) competed in the shot put and the discus. French came in third in the discus with a throw of 49.69 meters and was ninth in the shot put with a mark of 14.70 meters. Thomson registered a personal best mark of 13.37 meters in the shot put and threw for 43.90 meters in the discus.
Freshman
Caroline Carlson (Miami, Fla.) competed her first collegiate heptathlon with a score of 4,045 points. The final three events of the heptathlon were contested on Saturday and Carlson recorded marks of 4.87 meters in the long jump, 28.53 meters in the javelin and 2:41.33 in the 800 meters.
