Stuba Scored Seven Goals to Lead Wildcats Past Siena, 21-12

Nine different players scored for Villanova in the first of two games on Sunday afternoon

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Junior utility Kaysie Stuba (La Grange, Ill.) powered a dominant offensive effort with seven goals and Villanova (6-4, 2-2 MAAC) rolled to a 21-12 win over Siena (0-4, 0-4 MAAC) at the Villanova Swim Complex on Sunday morning. The game was the first of two on the day for the Wildcats, who later returned to the pool for an impressive 20-8 win over No. 23 Iona.

Stuba tallied nine points with seven goals and two assists. She scored one of the Wildcats four power play goals and converted a penalty shot in addition to making two steals on defense. Nine different players scored goals for Villanova, including six multi-goal games for an offense which was in top form on the day. Junior center defender Amanda Rice (San Jose, Calif.) had three goals, three assists and four steals in a strong performance on both sides of the ball.

Sophomore attacker Allie Hansen (Friendswood, Texas) and sophomore attacker Lauren Picard (Darien, Conn.) each had two goals and three assists, while freshmen attackers Sydney Bianchi (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Stella Byles (Portland, Ore.) also scored twice. The scoring column was rounded out by goals from junior utility Isabel Herbst (Glenbrook, Ill.), sophomore attacker Joia McKinney (Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Lillie Jones (Honolulu, Hawaii).

Despite the final outcome, it was the Saints who got off to a fast start with leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first quarter. The tide started to turn for the Wildcats late in the opening period however, as Villanova trimmed the margin to 3-2 with 2:20 to play in the quarter and tied the score at 3-3 on a goal by Picard with 1:26 remaining. That momentum carried over to the second period, as the surging Wildcats scored four unanswered goals in a span of 2:04 to build a 7-3 lead with 5:36 to play before halftime.

Byles gave Villanova its first lead of the game with a goal just 20 seconds into the second quarter, while scores by Hansen at the 6:51 mark and Picard with 6:17 remaining extended the score to a 6-3 margin. Sophomore goalie Emily Morrissey (Ambler, Pa.), who only converted from being a field player in the middle of this season, made one of her 14 saves with 5:57 to go in the period and the Wildcats scored on a power play 21 seconds later for a 7-3 advantage. Morrissey added two assists in a strong all-around effort.

In the final minute before halftime, Stuba scored with 58 seconds to play and Villanova hit the post with 23 seconds left before Morrissey saved a shot as the first half buzzer sounded. Stuba and Hansen led the Wildcats in the opening half and Villanova outscored Siena by an 8-2 margin in the decisive second quarter.

There was an exciting sequence of play in a span of less than a minute in the third period. Morrissey saved a shot with 5:54 to play, but a foul against the Wildcats led to a deft backhanded goal by Saints utility Georgia Vargas who trimmed the Villanova margin to 11-6 at the 5:42 mark of the quarter. Stuba was awarded a penalty shot and scored just 11 seconds later, while Siena had a penalty shot of its own with 5:16 to play in the period. Kristen Burger took that penalty for the Saints and Morrissey came up with a big save to keep the score at 12-6 as the Wildcats called a timeout to end the frenetic stretch.

Siena scored with 2:55 to play in the third quarter to get to within 14-7, but Villanova counted just 24 seconds later and Morrissey made consecutive saves with 2:07 remaining and 1:35 left in the quarter. The Saints got to within 15-8 at the end of the third period, but the Wildcats outscored their visitors, 6-4, in the final eight minutes to tally the win in the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season. Villanova leads the all-time series by a 19-17 margin and has won 12 of the last 15 meetings.
