Akinjide Awujo (Atlanta, Ga.) supplied much of the firepower in Villanova's 4-1 victory last week over Connecticut at the Higgins Soccer Complex. On Monday, both were added to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor for those efforts.
Quartey scored Villanova's first two goals against the Huskies, including a penalty kick conversion that proved to be the game-winner. Awujo assisted on Quartey's first goal and then scored one himself in the second half for a three point afternoon as the Wildcats claimed their second conference victory of the spring 2021 campaign.
That duo joined a list of other BIG EAST award winners named Monday.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Diego Gutierrez, Creighton, Sr., F (Omaha, Neb.)
Creighton senior forward Diego Gutierrez posted five points in a pair of Bluejay victories last week, 3-1 over Kansas City and 4-3 over DePaul. Gutierrez had the assist on Creighton's first goal during a 3-1 win against KC on Monday. On Friday, he recorded four points by scoring a penalty kick goal and assisting two of CU's four goals, including on the game-winner in the 84th minute. The win secured the Bluejays' place in the BIG EAST men's soccer championship field, set to start April 15.
BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Rio Hope-Gund, Georgetown, Sr., D (New York, N.Y.)
Georgetown senior defender Rio Hope-Gund helped Georgetown to a 5-1 win over UConn on Saturday as the Hoyas advanced to 6-0-2. Hope-Gund and the GU defense held UConn to just four shots on goal, five overall. Georgetown advanced to 6-0-2 on the season to lead the East Division. The game was Hope-Gund's final in a Hoya uniform as he has been called into preseason camp with Orlando City of Major League Soccer.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Gabriel Gjergji, Butler, Jr., GK (Vizenza, Italy)
Butler junior keeper Gabriel Gjergji earned the shutout victory with three saves as the Bulldogs defeated Xavier 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. Gjergji's defense held the Musketeers to seven shots with only four on target. Gjergji kept his net clean through almost 100 minutes. Gjergji's goals against average for the season is 1.02. He has three shutouts this season.
Freshman of the Week
Duncan McGuire, Creighton, Fr., F (Omaha, Neb.)
Creighton freshman forward Duncan McGuire totaled four points from two assists and one goal during the Bluejays' 2-0 week. McGuire had a pair of assists on Monday against Kansas City in a 3-1 win, including one on the eventual game-winner. McGuire did score the game-winning goal against DePaul on Friday night at Morrison Stadium. The win secured the Bluejays' place in the BIG EAST men's soccer championship field, set to start April 15. McGuire's goal came in the 84th minute.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Wilmer Cabrera, Jr., Butler
Cabrera scored the game-winner in Butler's 1-0 overtime win over Xavier on Saturday. Cabrera's golden goal in the 100th minute was his fourth goal of the season, second game-winner.
Keegan Boyd, Creighton
Midfielder Boyd had three points from a goal and an assist in a 2-0 week for Creighton (3-1, Kansas City; 4-3, DePaul). Scored the first goal of the evening against DePaul. Held opponents to 10 shots on goal.
Jacob Montes, Georgetown
Montes has two goals and an assist in the 5-1 win over UConn in his final match with the Hoyas. Montes will be departing for a tryout in Europe.
