SANTRY, Dublin, Ireland—On the first day of competition at the 149
th Irish Life Health National Athletics Championships three Villanovans qualified for the final of their respective events at Morton Stadium on Friday night. Included in the trio is middle distance runner
Charlie O'Donovan (Cork, Ireland) who won his heat of the 1500 meters to automatically move on to Saturday's final. Also advancing were 2018 alum
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner who was an automatic qualifier in the women's 800 meters and 2019 alum

O'Donovan ran in the last of three heats and crossed the finish line in a winning time of 3:55.63 to hold off Cathal Doyle (3:55.94) for the win. The top four finishers in each heat and the next three fastest times qualified for the final on Saturday at 7:20 p.m. local time (2:20 p.m. Eastern time). O'Donovan is ranked seventh among the 12 qualifiers for the final and has a lifetime best mark of 3:40.90 in the 1500 meters which he set during the collegiate season at the Joe Walker Invitational at Ole Miss in April. One heat prior to O'Donovan's race on Friday, incoming Villanova freshman Sean Donoghue automatically qualified for the final with a second place finish (3:56.10) in his own heat of the 1500 meters.
Earlier in the evening, Purcell recorded a time of 48.00 in the heats of the 400 meters. He was qualified for the championships in both the 400 meters and the 800 meters, but only ran in his signature event which he won twice at the BIG EAST Championships during his collegiate career. Purcell was nipped at the line by Cathal Crosbie (47.85) in his heat on Friday, but was just fast enough to get the second on-time qualifying spot for the final. The top finisher in each of six heats and the next two fastest times advanced to Saturday's final at 4:55 p.m. local time (11:55 a.m. Eastern time).
Cleirigh Buttner raced in the last of three heats in the 800 meters and comfortably moved on to the final. She finished second in her race with a time of 2:11.69, with the top three in each heat and the next fastest time moving on to run at 4:20 p.m. local time (11:20 a.m. Eastern time) on Saturday. Cleirigh Buttner set an Irish record in the 800 meters earlier this year when she ran 2:00.58 at the American Track League meet in Arkansas in February. The 800 meters was her top event during a sensational collegiate career and she earned five All-America honors in the 800 meters, including finishing as high as second indoors and fourth outdoors as a senior in 2018.
