Past, Present and Future of Villanova Track & Field on Display at Irish National Championships

Rising junior Charlie O’Donovan was among four Villanovans who competed in Dublin this weekend

SANTRY, Dublin, Ireland—For the second straight day the past, present and future of Villanova track & field was on display at the 149th Irish Life Health National Athletics Championships at Morton Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Rising junior Charlie O'Donovan (Cork, Ireland) came in fifth in the final of the men's 1500 meters and was one of four athletes with Wildcats ties competing in the finals of their respective events at the Irish championships.

O'Donovan had won his heat of the 1500 meters on Friday to advance to the final where the field of 15 competitors also included incoming Villanova freshman Sean Donoghue who will join the Wildcats distance group this fall. In the championship race on Saturday, O'Donovan crossed the finish line with a time of 3:50.71 and Donoghue placed 13th in 3:58.14. The race wrapped up O'Donovan's strong spring season, which began with two cross country races in March and then transitioned to the outdoor track & field campaign. O'Donovan recorded personal best times in both the 1500 meters (3:40.95) and the 800 meters (1:49.50) during the season.

Saturday's events at the National Athletics Championships featured Wildcats alums Siofra Cleirigh Buttner '18 and Harry Purcell '19. Cleirigh Buttner was one of the favorites in the final of the women's 800 meters and she tallied a second place finish with a time of 2:03.84. The final was a close race which saw the top three finishers separated by less than a third of a second at the finish line. Cleirigh Buttner set an Irish record indoors earlier this year when she ran a lifetime best of 2:00.58 in the 800 meters in a race in the United States.

Purcell was an on-time qualifier for the final of the men's 400 meters and he finished eighth in the championship race with a time of 48.35. He was a two-time BIG EAST champion in the 400 meters during his collegiate career.

Villanova has been well-represented in Olympic trials and national championships across the world over the past two weeks. There were seven Wildcats past and present who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore., while women's thrower Jul Thomson is competing this weekend at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Montreal.
