Volleyball Takes Down Providence for Second BIG EAST Victory

Andrea Campos totals career-high 54 assists

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Villanova University's volleyball team finished its weekend on a high note with a four-set victory (22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16) over the Providence Friars at Alumni Hall on Saturday.

"It's good to get a win," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We served and passed much better today. I thought we defended much better in the second, third and fourth sets and that made the difference."

Four players totaled double-digit kills for Villanova (6-14, 2-6 BIG EAST), paced by 14 each for Rose Crist and Kiera Booth. Riley Homer added a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs along with five blocks, while Tara Garvey notched a career-high 11 terminations.

Andrea Campos tallied a career-high 54 assists and three blocks in addition to nine digs, while Madeline Barber contributed five blocks and a career-high four service aces.

The Wildcats continue their historic domination of Providence, picking up the program's 15th win in the series. VU now owns an eight-game edge with a 15-6 record against the Friars.

Neither side could establish a large advantage in the first frame, as the stanza contained six ties and three lead changes. After the 'Cats went up 14-12, Providence used a 6-2 run to secure a lead it wouldn't relinquish, winning 25-22.

Villanova hopped out to an early lead in the second period, going up 8-3 to begin the set. The 'Cats did not trail the entire frame, cruising to a 25-16 victory.

The teams traded points to begin the stanza, but four straight from Providence brought the Friars to a 9-6 lead. But the 'Cats battled right back and tied the score at 12-12, then finished on a 13-8 run to capture the frame.

VU dominated the fourth set, securing early advantages of 10-5 and 12-6. The Wildcats kept the momentum through the rest of the stanza, hitting .387 in the period and advancing to the team's second win in BIG EAST play.

UP NEXT: Villanova will return home for two matches next weekend, facing Creighton on Friday and Xavier on Saturday at Jake Nevin Field House.
