Wildcats Defeated By No. 18 Creighton on Cancer Awareness Night

Villanova prepares for home match against Xavier on Saturday

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova volleyball suffered a defeat on Friday night, falling to the No. 18 Creighton Bluejays in straight sets (25-22, 25-12, 25-18) at the Jake Nevin Field House.

"I thought we played really hard tonight," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "I'm proud of our effort but we have to execute better to get a win."

Six players notched kills for Villanova (6-15, 2-7 BIG EAST), led by six each from Tara Garvey and Kiera Booth. Andrea Campos put up a team-high 18 assists, while Taryn Whittingham contributed 11 digs for the 'Cats.

Creighton utilized a 6-0 scoring run to take a commanding lead in the first stanza, leading by as many as eight. But VU stormed back and brought the deficit to 17-15, then after a CU run, the 'Cats brought it to 20-19. But Creighton got those five points it needed, picking up a 25-22 win.

The 'Jays got out to another hot start in the second frame, securing an early 10-4 advantage. Creighton powered through the remainder of the set, taking a 25-12 victory to go up two sets.

It was another Creighton lead to begin the third period, as CU went up 10-4 again. But Villanova brought the score closer, getting it to 11-9 and prompting a Bluejays timeout. Creighton retook momentum, though, and moved on to a 25-18 win for a sweep of the match.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats have one more matchup remaining on the weekend, playing host to the Xavier Musketeers at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
