Wildcats Are Victorious Over the Bobcats in Close 4-3 Win

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.- The Villanova Wildcats take down the Bobcats of Quinnipiac in a close 4-3 win in the fourth quarter.

The first quarter was scoreless between the two teams as they battled against one another. The Wildcats had were slow to the start but were moving the ball well when they had possession.

In the second quarter they started to get their momentum going with a goal scored by junior forward #17 Amanda Middleman (11:08) who dove to deflect the ball into the goal from a great pass from sophomore midfielder #4 Emma Schwarz. Schwarz.

After halftime, Middleman scored another goal off of a rebounded shot (8:27) from teammate junior forward #11 Meghan Mitchell getting past the goalkeeper and sending the ball into the back of the net.  Graduate midfielder #27 Noor Van de Laar followed Middleman's goal up with her own (3:29) off a great pass from senior forward #31 Caitlin Van Goeverden. Quinnipiac had some tricks of their own up their sleeves and, after the third Wildcat goal, came out with high energy and shifted into high gear. They found their way on the board with 12 seconds left in the third.

The Bobcats continued to fight back and scored back-to-back goals to equalize the score in the fourth with less than 5 minutes to go in quarter. Villanova remained vigilant to the time and found new energy to get themselves back in the game by becoming more aggressive on the attack. Junior back #14 Sabine de Ruijter hit the game winner off a corner assisted by sophomore midfielder #25 Raina Smolij and #10 Anne Drabbe.

This win marks the Wildcats tenth wins in one season, the last time they did this was in 2008 when they ended their season with a 12-7 record.

Middleman, who had a great game offensively, touched on the what the Wildcat did today to earn the win and what they are looking forward to going into their last regular season game next week.

"Quinnipiac really held their own and they came back, but I thought that we really composed ourselves and just brought it right back. We had a great start. We fell apart a little bit, but again, we came right back. We got our goals back, we got our composure back, and we finished strong," said Middleman. "I'm excited for the Georgetown game. I think it'll be awesome. We just have to tie everything together for the last time. To play with the seniors for the last time and just finish our chances to make Big East. Hopefully we can win and go to Big East, that'd be amazing."

The Wildcats jump back on the road to face off against the Monarchs of Old Dominion University on Friday Sep. 30. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
