Indianapolis, Ind.- The Wildcats held off the Bulldogs for nearly 86 minutes of action but it wouldn't be enough to hold on for the match as the Bulldogs defeated Villanova 1-0 on Thursday evening.
Megan McClay finished with six saves, half of them diving stops to keep the Wildcats in the game. In the opening half Butler took 17 shots while the Wildcats lone came in the 37
th minute when
Brigid Molloy sent a long shot from 25 yards out on target that was saved by the Butler keeper. McClay had a pair of saves in the opening half. The Wildcats tried to set up a scoring chance in the final minute of the first half but a cross pass into the box was just wide.
Butler's offense stayed on the attack in the second half having 13 more shots, seven on goal. McClay had a save in the opening minutes of the second half, she had four in the final 45.
Megan Donnelly had a strong scoring chance for the Wildcats in the 55
th minute but the shot hit the crossbar.
After a foul just over midfield Butler was awarded, a free kick taken by Abigail Isger in the 86
th minute. The ball was played into the box and found Amelie Darey who pushed the ball to the near corner and found Caitlin O'Malley. O'Malley was able to get a cross shot just by a diving McClay to make the final 1-0.
On Sunday the Wildcats will return to action and take on the Creighton Bluejays in Omaha, Neb. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. ET
