NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Junior middle distance runner
Sean Dolan (Pennington, N.J.) continued his assault on the Villanova record books with the third-fastest indoor Mile in school history at the Indoor Music City Challenge on Friday evening. Dolan and senior
Charlie O'Donovan (Cork, Ireland) added the latest sub-four minute mile times to their ledgers at the David II Williams Recreation and Wellness Center in a field consisting of many of the top NCAA milers this season.
Dolan lowered his lifetime PR by just over eight-tenths of a second with a blistering time of 3:56.39 in Friday's race. He finished eighth overall with a time that tentatively ranked No. 17 on this year's Division I qualifying list, pending the outcomes of other meets around the nation this weekend. It is the second straight race and fourth time during the last two NCAA indoor seasons that Dolan has broken four minutes in the Mile.
The only two faster indoor miles in the Wildcats record book were run by Don Paige (3:54.22) and Sydney Maree (3:55.5) during the 1980 and 1981 seasons, respectively. Dolan now ranks fifth overall on the all-time Villanova performance list in the Mile based on results recorded during the collegiate season of competition. He has recorded the second fastest indoor 800 meters and now the third-fastest indoor Mile in school history within the last 30 days.
O'Donovan came in 10
th in the fastest section of the Mile that he and Dolan competed in. His time of 3:58.17 is the second-fastest of his career, trailing only his PR of 3:57.46 from the Sykes & Sabock Challenge at Penn State last month. O'Donovan beat the mark of 3:58.95 which he ran in his first career sub-four minute effort in Boston in January 2020. He and Dolan rank second and third on this year's BIG EAST performance list in the Mile and both rank in the top 25 nationally.
Later on Friday night junior
Haftu Strintzos (Melbourne, Australia) raced in the fastest section of the 5000 meters and came in second with a time of 13:50.42. The mark puts him into 29
th place nationally and fifth in the BIG EAST for the current season as both the conference and national leaderboards take shape for NCAA Championships qualifying later in the season.
Strintzos ran at or near the front of the pack for the entirety of the 5K race on Friday night. He was settled into second place behind Ethan Kern of Kentucky early in the race, but the second half of the race was largely a head-to-head duel between Strintzos and Cole Bullock of Ole Miss. Strintzos moved into the lead near the midway point of the race and held the advantage for roughly 1000 meters before official splits showed Bullock taking the lead and hanging on to it with 900 meters to go.
Villanova has more to come in Nashville this weekend, as sections of the 800 meters and the 3000 meters will be contested on Saturday afternoon. Junior
Miller Anderson (West Hartford, Conn.) runs in the 800 meters while the trio of redshirt freshman
Jack Jennings (Mendham, N.J.), redshirt freshman
Liam Murphy (Millstone, N.J.) and senior
Josh Phillips (Belrose, Australia) represent the Wildcats in the 3000 meters.
