ANNAPOLIS, Md.—In the first of two weekend matches at the Tose Family Tennis Center this weekend, junior
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) was a winner in straight sets at No. 5 singles as Villanova (1-3) fell to Fairleigh Dickinson (3-2) by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday evening. The matches at each of the top two singles spots were unfinished when the Knights clinched the team result. Both teams will also square off against host Navy in matches played on Sunday.
Kim won both of his matches against Fairleigh Dickinson, including a No. 3 doubles match in which he teamed with junior
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) for a 6-1 victory over Taiga Koyama and Fernando Tardin. The pair posted a win in the first doubles match to be completed before the Knights scored victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to clinch the first point of the day.
Senior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) faced Justas Trainauskas and Niclas Pietsch in the No. 1 spot and fell in a narrow 6-4 decision. Freshman
Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) lost in a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles to Arjun Sriram and Moric Budinszky.
In singles play Kim scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over Aryan Manchanda which made the team score 2-1. Fairleigh Dickinson had extended its lead to 2-0 after Sriram tallied a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Suarez in the No. 3 singles match. Jones and sophomore
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) each went to three sets in competitive matches at the No. 4 and No. 6 lineup spots, respectively. Jones swept his opening set against Tardin before ultimately falling in a 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 decision. Nguyen also won his opening set against Pietsch before being defeated 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The first two singles matches were also in third sets when competition concluded. Fourticq played at No. 2 singles against Budinszky and was leading the match 2-6, 6-0, 4-3; Robinson trailed Trainauskas by a count of 6-2, 6-7 (5), 2-1 in the No. 1 singles match.
Villanova's match against Navy on Sunday afternoon gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
