Women's Basketball to Close Out Regular Season at Xavier Sunday

The Villanova Wildcats will close out the 2021-22 regular season on Sunday afternoon with a road game at Xavier. Villanova enters play with a 20-7 overall record and a 14-4 BIG EAST mark, while the Musketeers are 9-18 overall and 4-14 in league play. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., at the Cintas Center.
 
Villanova and Xavier will be meeting for the second time this season when the two teams meet on Sunday afternoon. In the first game, the Wildcats tallied an 82-57 home win over the Musketeers. Maddy Siegrist led the way in the victory with 30 points and nine rebounds. She was 11-of-18 from the field, 4-of-8 from three and 4-of-6 from the foul line. Lior Garzon finished with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting (5-of-10 from three). Xavier was paced by Nia Clark with 11 points. She was the only Musketeer in double figures. For the game, Villanova was 28-of-62 from the field (45.2%), 13-of-32 from three-point range (40.6%) and 13-of-22 from the foul line (59.1%), while Xavier shot 38.9 percent from the floor (21-of-54), 37.5 percent from long distance (3-of-8) and 70.6 percent from the charity stripe (12-of-17). Villanova owned a 41-27 advantage on the backboards. The Wildcats committed just eight turnovers.
 
Sunday's game versus Xavier will be the 18th all-time meeting between the two schools. Villanova leads the all-time series against the Musketeers by a 16-1 count. The first meeting came on March 21, 2006, when the Wildcats defeated the Musketeers by a score of 59-47 in the second round of the WNIT. The other 16 match-ups have taken place when the Wildcats and Musketeers became members of the Big East Conference. Xavier's lone win in the series came in a 75-67 overtime victory on Dec. 31, 2015, in a game played at the Cintas Center.
 
Villanova tallied win number 20 on Friday with a 72-36 victory at Butler. This is the 21st season of 20 wins or more in program history and first since 2017-18 when the Wildcats were 23-9. It was also the seventh 20-win season for Denise Dillon as a collegiate head coach. Dillon tallied six, 20-win campaigns during her 17-year career at Drexel.
 
Siegrist turned in another 30-point game in Villanova's win at Butler on Friday. In 29 minutes of action, she had 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting, including a 5-of-8 effort from three-point range. Siegrist has now reached the 30-point mark in six of the last nine games.  Siegrist leads the BIG EAST with nine 30-point efforts this season and she has 17 career 30-point games to her credit.
 
Next up for the Wildcats will be the BIG EAST Tournament which will be played from March 4-7 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
