Men’s Tennis Opens California Trip With 7-0 Loss at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Playing for the first time during its Spring Break trip to California the men's tennis team salvaged one of the three doubles matches but was ultimately defeated, 7-0, by UC Riverside (3-4) at the SRC Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon. Villanova (2-5) won the No. 3 doubles match in its first of four dual competitions on the West Coast this week.

Freshman Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) outlasted Joshua Roth and Aarav Sane for a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles. The pair won for the second time in as many matches after defeating Coppin State at the No. 2 doubles spot four days earlier. The host Highlanders had claimed the doubles point with wins in each of the first two doubles matches to finish.

In the singles matches sophomore Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) battled Sane in a close match that ended with a marathon tiebreaker. Nguyen won the opening set, 6-1, before Sane came back with a narrow 7-5 victory in the second set and an even more tenuous 11-9 margin in the tiebreak. Sophomore Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) also endured a hard match in the top lineup spot, falling to Antreas Djakouris in a 7-6 (5), 6-3 decision.

Next up for the Wildcats is a Wednesday afternoon matchup at UC Irvine.
