Villanova Wins Doubles Point and Two Singles Matches in 4-3 Loss to Drexel

Josh Robinson and Ryan Nguyen were singles winners for the Wildcats in Tuesday afternoon match

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Villanova (3-13) won the doubles point for the second straight match and claimed a pair of singles victories in a road match against Drexel (8-7) but ultimately fell by the narrowest of margins in a 4-3 loss at the Vidas Courts on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomores Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) and Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) posted wins in the No. 1 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively.

The day began with sophomore Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) and freshman Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) clinching the doubles point with their 7-6 (5) win over Djordje Janackovic and Alex De Sousa in the No. 2 doubles match.

The teams split the first two matches to be completed, with the Wildcats winning at No. 1 where senior Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and junior Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) notched a 6-1 decision over Hugo Brungs and Gustav Wogen. The Dragons drew even when Juan Manuel Sanchez and Matvey Radionov defeated sophomores Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) and Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) in a 6-4 result at No. 3 doubles.

During the singles matches the team score was tied at 2-2 when Robinson defeated Xandy Hammitt in three sets at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. He rallied after losing the opening set to pull out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory. Drexel had gone ahead 2-1 with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 in the first two singles matches to be completed. De Sousa and Jones went to three sets at No. 2 singles before the Drexel sophomore tallied a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision to get the Dragons on the board. Fourticq fell to Janackovic in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) in the No. 3 match.

Drexel ultimately clinched the team result with wins at No. 5 and No. 4 singles to go in front 4-2. Nguyen eventually outlasted Brungs in a marathon match at the No. 6 spot, however. He tallied his team-high 16th singles win of the season and fifth in dual competition with a 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory. The other two matches ended in straight sets, with Prokurat falling to Radionov (6-2, 6-3) in the No. 4 match and junior Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) being defeated by Manuel Sanchez (6-0, 6-0) in the fifth spot.

Villanova will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when it takes on Saint Joseph's in a 2 p.m. contest.
