WASHINGTON, D.C.—For the second time in the span of a week Villanova (3-14) had a match halted while in progress due to the arrival of inclement weather. Playing a Saturday afternoon match against Georgetown (7-11), the Wildcats trailed 3-0 when play was stopped following during the singles matches due to rain and severe weather in the area of Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School where the teams were facing each other.
The match had persisted for well over two hours with competitive play before the weather forced an initial delay followed by a cancelation when play could not be resumed. The host Hoyas won the two doubles matches which were completed to score the first point of the day and had also won a pair of singles matches to extend their lead to 3-0 by the time the rain arrived. Only one other match was in progress at that point, with junior
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) playing at No. 2 singles and holding a 7-6 (5), 3-3 advantage over Andrew Rozanov.
Villanova also had a lead in the match at No. 3 doubles but had not yet finished that competition when Georgetown clinched the doubles point. Sophomores
Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) and
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) were ahead 5-3 against Scott Bickel and Derek Raskopf at No. 3 doubles. Suarez and senior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) fell to Kieran Foster and Jake Fellows at No. 1 doubles (6-3), while sophomore
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) and freshman
Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) lost a 6-1 decision to Rozanov and Akira Morganstern in the No. 2 doubles match.
Foster opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Robinson at No. 1 singles. Fourticq lost by set scores of 6-0 and 6-4 to Fellows in the No. 3 singles match. The bottom half of the Wildcats lineup was due to include Jones at No. 4 singles, Prokurat in the No. 5 match and sophomore
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) in the sixth spot if the match had ben completed.
Saturday's cancelation leaves only a Tuesday afternoon home match versus Rider for Villanova before it opens play in the BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, S.C. later next week.
