VILLANOVA, Pa.—Playing outdoors on its home court for the first time during the Spring season Villanova (3-11) swept the doubles matches and won three of the six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 6-1 win over Loyola (Md.) (5-5) at the Villanova Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. Four different Wildcats posted wins in both their singles and doubles matches in a strong team victory.
The day started on a high note for Villanova as the team clinched the doubles point with three straight victories. Senior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and junior
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) finished their match first at No. 1 doubles where they cruised past Skyler Gates and George Cavo for a 6-0 victory. A 6-2 win by sophomore
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) and freshman
Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) at No. 2 doubles clinched the team point, while the sophomore duo of
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) and
Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) scored a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to complete the sweep.
Robinson clinched the team outcome for the Wildcats with a win at No. 1 singles. Villanova won five of the six singles matches overall, including each of the first three to be completed as it build a 4-0 lead. Robinson rallied after falling in his opening set against Gates and pulled out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory to secure the Wildcats third win of the season. The first two singles matches to conclude came in the third and fourth lineup spots where Fourticq and Jones were winners in straight sets. Fourticq defeated Matt Cardano (6-4, 6-0) and Jones eased past Cavo (6-2, 6-4).
The visiting Greyhounds scored their only win of the day in a close match at No. 2 singles where Edik Pribitkin outlasted Suarez for a 6-4, 7-6 (6) result. Villanova closed the match with wins in the last two lineup spots, with Prokurat scoring a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Liam Rompere and sophomore
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) overcoming a loss in the opening set to rally past Ryan Boland in a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision.
The Wildcats return home this coming Wednesday afternoon to host Drexel for a 2 p.m. match.
