MERION STATION, Pa.—Three of the six singles matches went to a third set and five total sets featured tiebreakers as Villanova (3-7) won a thriller over Saint Joseph's (4-8) by a narrow 4-3 margin at the SJU Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman
Emma Brogan (Kennesaw, Ga.) outlasted her opponent at No. 2 singles in the last match to be completed to clinch the winning point for the Wildcats. The team win for Villanova was a come-from-behind one as the Hawks won the doubles point and the first singles match before the Wildcats stormed back to win four of the final five matches of the day.
Brogan matched up against Stow Weiss at No. 2 singles in a marathon that was tightly contested in all three sets. She won the opening set and then traded the next two sets with Weiss before pulling out a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6) decision. Brogan evened her singles record at 8-8 on the season while notching her third dual win of the year. The other victories for Villanova in Wednesday's match came from senior
Annalise Klopfer (Palm Harbor, Fla.) at the top of the lineup, freshman
Valieriia Kornieva (Dnipro, Ukraine) at No. 4 singles and sophomore
Bella Steffen (Cary, N.C.) in the fifth spot.
The first match to be completed was at No. 3 singles where junior
Caitlin Fisher (Cincinnati, Ohio) fell to Emily Elliott by set scores of 7-6 (1) and 6-2. That result put the Wildcats into a 2-0 hole after Saint Joseph's had recorded the first point of the match by winning two of the three doubles competitions. Fisher and senior
Olivia Kapp (Milton, Ga.) were 6-3 winners over Paige Conrad and Alex Kramer at No. 3 doubles. Villanova and the Hawks split the first two doubles matches before a win by Saint Joseph's at the No. 1 spot clinched the doubles point.
Steffen got the Wildcats on the board at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sophia Amato and Kornieva knotted the team score at 2-2 when she eased past Fabiana Tort-Umpierre in a 7-5, 6-2 triumph. Villanova went in front by a 3-2 margin when Klopfer blanked Amanda Nava in the third set to notch a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-0 win. Klopfer has won five straight singles matches and is now 8-1 (.889) in the No. 1 spot in the lineup this season.
The match came down to the final two singles matches at the No. 6 and No. 2 spots in the lineup. Junior
Amanda Rivera-Gonzalez (Bayamon, P.R.) won her opening set at No. 6 singles but was eventually defeated by Ireland Amato in a nearly even 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 result. Brogan broke the tie in the team score for good with her win against Weiss.
In the first two doubles matches, Brogan and Klopfer were defeated by Nava and Weiss in a 7-6 (1) decision in the No. 1 match while senior
Sabina Grigorian (Atlanta, Ga.) and Kornieva fell to Elliott and Anna Kirk (6-3) in the No. 2 spot.
