Wildcats and Blue Hens Play to a 1-1 Draw

Villanova, Pa.- A first half goal from Izzy Newton helped the Villanova Wildcats earn a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon against the Delaware Blue Hens.  Villanova moved to 0-1-1 in the opening weekend and Delaware to 1-0-1.

The Wildcats got on the board first in the 26th minute.  Sophomore Lauren Belcuore played the ball on the near side endline and sent a pass into the box.  The ball found Newton who got a quick touch on the ball and got it past the keeper to make it 1-0.  This was Newton's first collegiate goal and Villanova's first of the season.

Just before half-time the Blue Hen's tied the game.  Following a foul ten yards outside the box that was played in by Lauren Elwell and found Grace Harvey.  There Harvey in a lot of traffic in front of the goal was able to tap it over to Lea Panagiotidis, who connected for the goal with just over 20 seconds to go before halftime.

The Wildcat's in the second half took seven shots and their best scoring chance came in the 78th minute when Olivia Packer sent a rocket shot right to the top of the goal.  The Delaware keeper was able to just reach and punch the ball out of play to keep the game tied at 1.  Megan McClay played all 90 minutes in goal and had four saves on the day.

Villanova will stay home and host Rider on Thursday at 4:00 P.M.  The game can be seen on Nova Nation All-Access on FloSports.
