CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa—The BIG EAST's top offenses did not disappoint on Friday afternoon as Villanova and Old Dominion combined for 11 goals, the most in a BIG EAST contest this season. Villanova ended up on the losing end with a score of 6-5.
The Monarchs (8-5, 4-1) opened the scoring just two minutes in as reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Marlon de Bruijne scored off a penalty corner. The Wildcats responded with three unanswered goals from
Anne Drabbe,
Sabine de Ruijter and
Meghan Mitchell before ODU scored two more to equalize before the halftime whistle.
Both teams continued their impressive offensive display in the second half. De Ruiter's second goal of the game put the 'Cats ahead off a penalty corner. The Monarchs then replied with three goals in five minutes to take a two-goal lead into the fourth quarter where
Barrett Trigg netted her first career goal to pull within one.
Penalty corners proved to be the difference in this one as the Monarchs scored four goals on 16 corners as the Wildcats had four corners. ODU outshot Villanova 29-17.
Emma Leppert was impressive in goal recording 11 saves in the loss. De Ruijter led the Wildcats with two goals, Drabbe tallied a goal and an assist,
Raina Smolij recorded two assists as
Amanda Middleman and
Emma Schwarz had one.
Gemma Lysaght recorded a defensive save to keep the Wildcats within one late in the fourth quarter.
The Monarchs were led by de Bruijne with two goals and two assists. Suus Broers recorded seven saves in the win.
Villanova (8-6, 3-2) looks to bounce back next week in a BIG EAST showdown at Temple. With a win the Wildcats will clinch their first BIG EAST tournament birth since 2018. Game time is set 1 p.m. Friday, October 20
