VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova University will officially unveil "Wright Way", the newly named drive between the Davis Center and Finneran Pavilion, prior to its home men's basketball game on Wednesday, Nov. 29 against Saint Joseph's University (6:30 p.m./FS1 and Villanova IHeart Radio Network).
As part of the September 11, 2021, induction of longtime Wildcats' head coach Jay Wright into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Villanova Vice-President/Director of Athletics Mark Jackson announced plans to honor the career of Wright. In 21 seasons from 2001-22, Wright became the Wildcats' men's program all-time leader in victories (520), steering Villanova to four NCAA Final Fours and a pair of NCAA national championships (2016 and 2018).
The redesign will be unveiled as part of a ceremony set to get underway at 4:30 p.m. in front of Finneran Pavilion.
"We're beyond thrilled to complete this tribute to the incredible legacy of Jay and Patty Wright," stated Jackson. "Over 21 years, they were our guides on an amazing journey for which we are forever grateful. Together they fully embraced our University's mission of Unitas, Veritas, Caritas as humble servant leaders.
"This beautiful new area, connecting the two campus homes of Villanova Basketball, honors Jay and Patty's contributions in a unique design. 'Wright Way' acknowledges the leadership of the Wrights and the teamwork on the part of student-athletes, coaches, and the Nova Nation who gave us all such wonderful memories."
Wright, a 1983 graduate of Bucknell University, first came to Villanova in 1987 as an assistant to coach Rollie Massimino. He served five seasons before accompanying Massimino to UNLV in 1992. In 1994, he was named head coach at Hofstra University, where he served seven seasons. On March 27, 2001, he was named head coach at Villanova.
The Associated Press named Wright its Coach of the Decade for his work from 2010-20 and he was a six-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year. The Wildcats posted a 34-16 mark in NCAA Tournament playing during Wright's stewardship (.680) and advanced to the NCAA Final Four in his final season (2021-22).
Wright retired from coaching in April 2022. He currently serves as a Special Assistant to University Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, and as a college basketball analyst for CBS/Turner.
