Matt Campbell Named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week to Headline Three Weekly Honors

Chet Comizio and Patrick Daly were each named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday afternoon

NEW YORK—After tallying a road win over the No. 10 ranked team in the country, Villanova broke into the national rankings itself on Monday to go along with three players earning weekly BIG EAST honors in an announcement made by the conference office this afternoon. Fifth year Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) highlighted the award winners as the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week, while fifth year attackman Patrick Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and fifth year SSDM Chet Comizio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) were each named to the weekly Honor Roll.

All three of the Wildcats honorees played starring roles in yesterday's thrilling 13-12 win over Delaware. This is the second time this season that Campbell and Daly have been recognized with BIG EAST weekly honors, while Comizio lands on the Honor Roll for the first time this year and the second time in his career. Campbell has earned weekly BIG EAST honors 10 times in his career and Daly has been recognized three times. Villanova has now received seven weekly BIG EAST honors through the first three weeks of the 2023 campaign.

Campbell scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 remaining in yesterday's win over the Blue Hens, the fifth straight win for the Wildcats in the all-time series between the former CAA foes. The game-winning goal not only broke the fifth tie score of the game and lifted Villanova to the win, it also was the 128th career goal that Campbell has scored in a Wildcats uniform. That number ties the all-time program record which Campbell now shares with Chris Sullivan (1988-91) and Jack Rice (2010-13). Campbell has played four career games against the Blue Hens and in those contests has scored 22 goals on 29 shots on goal.

A veteran of 52 career games and 49 starts in a Villanova uniform, Campbell is tied for the Wildcats career goals record and ranks fifth in school history with 181 points. He stands 32 points shy of the record of 213 points held by Rick Bontatibus (1991-94). Through games played this past weekend, Campbell ranks third among all active Division I players in career goals and is sixth on the active career points list.

Daly registered his third consecutive hat trick to being the 2023 season with three goals on just four shots in the Delaware win. Two of his three goals gave Villanova the lead in the back-and-forth contest, including a score at the 11:46 mark of the fourth period which put the Wildcats ahead, 10-9.  Daly has scored 10 goals through the first three games of the season and he now ranks 11th in school history in career goals (94) as well as 16th in points (121).

There was still a chance for Delaware to draw even after Campbell's late game-winning goal in Sunday's contest, but Comizio helped keep the Blue Hens at bay with his second caused turnover of the game with just 35 seconds to play. Comizio had a huge defensive game in the narrow victory as he picked up a career-high seven ground balls to go along with tying for the team lead with two caused turnovers. The stalwart member of the Villanova defense is averaging better than five ground balls per game this season and he moved into eighth place on the Wildcats career list for caused turnovers with 46 through Sunday's game.

Villanova is nationally-ranked for the first time this season as it entered the Inside Lacrosse media poll at No. 18 and came in at No. 16 in the USILA Coaches Poll.
