Water Polo Heads to California for Convergence Tournament

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The early-season road trips continue for Villanova as the team heads to California for a nine-game set, starting with the Convergence Tournament this weekend.

The two-day event will pit Villanova (4-7) against four different teams. Villanova takes on Santa Clara (5-7) at 2:15 p.m. EST and Cal Lutheran (1-7) at 6 p.m. EST on March 3 from the Axelrood Pool on the campus of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. March 4 will take the team to Occidental's De Mandel Aquatics Center to face Occidental (0-9) at 2:40 p.m. EST and Fresno Pacific (6-8) at 5:20 p.m. EST.

This is the second consecutive year that the team in taking part in the event that hosts a field of 27 participating programs playing in a total of 53 games over the two days. In their first return to the event last year since 2019, the 'Cats went 3-1 on the weekend, winning by a 54-33 scoring margin.

Before this weekend, Villanova has faced Santa Clara four other times, the most recent meeting being at last year's tournament where Villanova won 11-5. Saturday's contest with Cal Lutheran will be the 10th between the two sides and the first since 2017. Since 2008, Villanova trails the series by a slight 4-5 margin with all four of those wins coming in the last four games.

Villanova and Occidental have not gone toe-to-toe since 2019 when Villanova extended its winning streak to three games with a 15-6 victory at the Claremont Convergence Tournament. Since 1998, Villanova leads the series with the Tigers 6-4. Saturday will be the fifth meeting all-time with Fresno Pacific in a series where Villanova trails 1-3. The 'Cats have not seen a win since Feb. 28, 2015 with the Sunbirds winning both of the last two meetings.
