Here We Go Again: This game will mark 35
th time that Villanova and Bucknell have faced off with one another dating back to 1899. The Wildcats lead the Bison 25-10 all-time. At Bucknell the 'Cats are 8-4 and have won the last two away matchups at Depew Field. The last meeting between the 'Cats and the Bison was in 2022 at home where Villanova took a 10-4 victory adding to the Wildcat's now four-game all-time winning streak over Bucknell.
Leading Cam: Junior infielder
Cameron Hassert had a big week starting all four games primarily at second base, first at Penn and in the three-game series versus Rider. Hassert was a key player in the home opening game against Rider where he went 4-for-4 scoring two runs, walking once, and hitting a huge momentum shifting inside the park home run which reenergized the team. Hassert also drove in the game tying runs off a single to deep left field with two 'Cats scoring on the play in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Due to his efforts Villanova was able to pull out the 7-6 victory in the 10
th inning. On the week he was 8-for-14 scoring three runs and walking four times slashing .571/.667/.786.
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work: In the home opener victory over Rider, senior first
baseman Jack O'Reilly and senior catcher
John Whooley played big roles in earning the second win on the season for the 'Cats. O'Reilly sent one over the right field wall in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game up 3-3. Whooley, stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 10
th inning with two men on and smashed a double to left field to bring in O'Reilly for the winning run.
Putting In The Work: Starting pitcher
Chic DeGaetano had a stellar outing on the mound starting for the 'Cats in the first game of the series versus Rider tossing for 5.1 innings fanning six and only allowing in three runs. Graduate pitcher
Zach Camp earned the win on the day after coming in as the closer in the 10
th inning to hold the Broncs off.
Background On The Bison
- Bucknell enters the midweek matchup after taking a short trip to Annapolis, Md. for weekend series with Navy. The Bison split the series losing the first two games and winning second two on the weekend scoring a total of 35 runs over the four competitions.
- Junior outfielder Kyle Lyons, sophomore third baseman Sean Keys, and junior outfielder Jacob Corson are the combined power leading the Bison offense. All three of the Bisons have started all 18 games so far this season.
- Lyons has gone 21-for-62 slashing .339/.423/.371 and hitting two doubles, with six RBI, and scoring 11 runs. In the outfield he has made 40 putouts, three assists, and one error so far on the season.
- Keys has gone 18-for-64 slashing .281/.373/.500 and hitting five doubles, three home runs, with 17 RBI, and scoring 10 runs. At third he has made 18 putouts, 38 assists, and five errors so far on the season.
- Corson has gone 15-for-56 slashing .268/.481/.464 and hitting two doubles, three home runs, with 15 RBI, and scoring 14 runs. In the outfield he has made 26 putouts, one assist, and two errors so far on the season.
- Junior left-handed pitcher Bryce Reimer will start on the hill for the Bison. Reimer has only made two game appearance and one start this season. Reimer came in as relief for 0.2 innings versus Boston College. He struck out one and allowed three hits, two runs, and one home run in the 9-1 loss to the Eagles on February 24. More recently he started against North Carolina A&T on March 4 and tossed for 1.0 innings striking out two and issuing two wild pitches. Reimer allowed three hits, one double, two home runs, and three runs in on the day.
