PRINCETON, N.J.—Severe weather near the Princeton campus wiped out the majority of the day's event schedule at the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The lone Villanova athlete to compete before the meet was halted and ultimately canceled was fifth year pole vaulter
Ashley Preston (Franklinville, N.J.) who cleared a height of 3.80 meters in the pole vault.
Despite the shortened meet it was a second straight strong outing for Preston, the season's BIG EAST leader in the pole vault who had cleared 3.95 meters in Miami a week earlier. She came into the competition on Saturday when the bar was at a height of 3.65 meters and made it over on her third attempt. Six athletes remained when the bar moved to 3.80 meters and Preston again made it over on her final try at the height.
Following two missed attempts at 3.90 meters, Preston passed on her final chance and opted for one try with the bar at a height of 4.00 meters. She wound up fourth out of 10 competitors at the meet and remains atop the BIG EAST performance list as well as in a tie for 42
nd place on the East Region descending order list.
Villanova returns to competition for the Virginia Challenge on April 21-22.
