Previously On Big 5 Baseball: This will be the second meeting of the season between Villanova and Saint Joseph's after the Hawks secured a 13-6 win over the Wildcats in early May. The Hawks had a dominant beginning half of the ballgame racking up the run to secure a substantial 13-2 lead. Villanova had a late comeback but fell short ending the game with a 13-6 loss.
Last Time Out: The Wildcats come off a two-game series at No. 20 Boston College this past weekend, dropping both games to the nationally ranked Eagles. In game one, the Wildcats took an early lead and continued to build off their momentum, but their pitching began to struggle in the bottom of the sixth to put the Eagles within one run. Boston College had an important bottom of the eighth to steal the lead away with a three-run homer taking the win 11-9 over Villanova. In game two, the Wildcats took an early, short-lived lead in the top of the first, but the Eagles quickly took the lead away in the bottom of the inning and continued to tally runs on the scoreboard. Boston College had a big bottom of the fifth to plate five runs and took a 12-3 win over the Wildcats in nine innings.
Camp You Believe It: Graduate pitcher
Zach Camp broke the record for most single season appearances in school history on May 13, 2023 with 31 appearances in game one of the Boston College series this past weekend. The previous record holder was Brian Manning who donned the title for 24 years, earning the honor in 1999 when he had 30 appearances on the season. Camp has now surpassed the latter with 32 game appearances and counting. The Wildcats have four more regular season games leaving more opportunities for Camp to extend his record.
Oh, Oh, Oh, O'Reilly: Senior first baseman
Jack O'Reilly had a strong week for the 'Cats offense against a nationally ranked Boston College team. In game one of series, he went 3-for-4, hitting a double and a triple while scoring two runs and batting in a runner without striking out. In game two, he went 3-for-4, hitting three doubles and scoring two runs. He slashed .750/.778/1.500 on the weekend and held up the Villanova attack in both games.
Honing In On The Hawks
- Saint Joseph's enters the series after taking on Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 three-game series over the past weekend. The Hawks swept the Rams taking game one 15-3, game two 12-6 and game three in a close 6-5 win in 10 innings.
- Junior outfielder Brett Callahan and sophomore outfielder Ryan Cesarini continue to lead the attack for the Hawks offense. Callahan and Cesarini have started each game since the 'Cats saw them last on May 3.
- Callahan continues to be dominant in left field and has gone 66-for-194 while slashing .340/.427/.619 and leading the team in runs (54), triples (5), home runs (10) and RBI (51). The junior has also hit 14 doubles this year. In the outfield he has made 84 putouts, five assists and one error. In Villanova's last encounter with Callahan, he went 3-for-4, hitting a double and a triple while touching home three times and batting in two runners.
- Cesarini continues to lend his efforts as the designated hitter with a few starts in the outfield this season. He is slugging the highest among his teammates with a .394/.483/.653 slash line and leads the team in hits (67) and doubles (16). Cesarini has also hit two triples and eight home runs while plating 44 runs and 50 RBI on the season so far. The last time the 'Cats saw Cesarini he only went 1-for-4 on the day however his one hit was a two-run homer in the bottom of the second and later in the bottom of the fifth he hit a fielder's choice for an RBI.
