NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Villanova softball picked up a pair of conference accolades in the final edition of BIG EAST weekly awards, with sophomore infielder
Ava Franz repeating as Player of the Week and junior
Tess Cites earning a mention to the honor roll.
Franz collected her second straight and third overall player of the week after she kept up her offensive tear with a 7-for-9 (.778) weekend against Providence, hitting a double, triple and two home runs as the Wildcats swept the Friars to secure the two seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. The sophomore added a team-high six runs and five RBI while contributing a walk and hit by pitch to total an .818 on base percentage. The Pennsylvania native also had five putouts and eight assists with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at second base and put up her first career four-hit performance in Sunday's 10-4 victory.
While Franz stole the show for the Wildcats, Cites also went 7-for-9 at the dish to total a .778 batting average in the series vs. Providence and earn an honor roll mention. The junior doubled twice, drove in five runs and crossed the plate four times while working three walks in her three starts in left field.
Villanova will head to Storrs, Connecticut, for the 2023 BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP, earning a first round bye as the second seed and taking on the winner of Wednesday's Seton Hall-DePaul contest at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
