Stadler’s Brace Helps ‘Cats Shutout Temple

Makayla Stadler’s two goals bookended Villanova’s 3-0 victory

PHILADELPHIA – Villanova picked up its second clean sheet victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Temple on Sunday afternoon at the Temple Sports Complex. Makayla Stadler bookended Villanova's scoring with a pair of goals.

This win marks the second 3-0 win for Villanova (2-0-1) on the season and moves the overall series with Temple (0-3-1) to 8-1-2 in favor of the Wildcats. Villanova has yet to face a loss when playing on Temple's home field, leading 4-0-1 in such contests with a 12-3 scoring advantage.

"I'll be honest, in the first 10 minutes, we had to adjust," Villanova head coach Samar Azem said. "Temple did some things that we're not used to seeing and we had to adjust. It was really cool to see how quickly we adjusted. I thought after the first 10 minutes, we got a hold of the game, we adjusted, we did really, really well there. It was great to give players time that haven't seen times that have done such an amazing job of helping us build every single day, so it was really good to be able to play a lot of players today and when we did that, we still continued to see ourselves in the game and competing in the game which is great."

Stadler's brace marks a new single-game career high for the graduate with two goals and four points. The forward accounted for three of the team's 17 shot attempts on the afternoon.  Fellow goal-scorer Olivia Packer also made three shot attempts, scoring her first Villanova goal. Maddie Fried led all 'Cats in shooting, landing three of her four shot attempts on frame.

"Makayla did great," Azem said. "The players around her did really, really well. It was an all-around team effort today, but, you know, it was cool to see her find her confidence in there."

Villanova needed just three minutes of action to jump ahead. Making her 2023 debut, Stadler sent a rocket from just inside the right corner of the 18-yard box that sailed across and into the back left of the net, giving Villanova a 1-0 lead.

Nearly a minute later, Jackie Richards had a chance from the left of the net that bounced off the inner post and back into play.

In the 17th minute, Megan Donnelly lined up for a corner that she sent into a pile in front of the net. Her shot found the head of Packer, brushing just past the outstretched hand of Temple's keeper Tamsin Bynoe to extend the lead, 2-0.

Villanova led shot attempts 7-5 through the first 45 minutes with both sides landing four chances on frame.  Each of Temple's chances were saved by Peyton Woodward.

Stadler struck again in the 55th minute to cement her brace. Fried quickly passed a look to Megan Donnelly who found Stadler inside the box. She went one-on-one with the keeper before sending a shot from six feet out, making it 3-0 for the Blue and White.

Another big opportunity came for the 'Cats deep in the box in the 58th minute, but each of the four shots taken were either blocked by the Owls or saved by Bynoe. Stadler had a chance for a hat trick 60 minutes in, but the flag came up showing she was just offside. In the 88th minute, Fried rocketed a long attempt, but it was caught by Bynoe.

Villanova's offense forced Temple's Bynoe to make eight saves on the day while Woodward was called upon for four on the other end of the pitch, all of those coming in the first half.

Next up for the Wildcats is a road trip to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Bucknell. Kickoff with the Bison is set for 7 p.m. Thursday from Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
