HAMDEN, Conn.—Meghan Mitchell's career-high four goals propelled Villanova to a thrilling comeback win over Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Mitchell was confident her team would respond.
"When we went down 3-0, we just had to flip the switch and play our game," said Mitchell. "We still believed in ourselves, and we knew we could dig ourselves out of that hole. It really showed how much heart our team can play with and how determined we were."
Mitchell got the Wildcats on the board 59 seconds after the Bobcats took their largest lead. A much-needed response as Quinnipiac tallied eight first quarter shots to Villanova's two. The second quarter saw just four total shots, but Mitchell made one count to make the score 3-2 at halftime.
The Villanova native dominated the second half, tying the game with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter by rifling a shot in from about 10 yards out. In the fourth quarter, Mitchell struck again to put the Wildcats ahead. A back-and-forth quarter saw freshman
Maeve Boston make her way into the arc and draw a penalty corner with nine minutes remaining. After
Raina Smolij knocked it down for
Anne Drabbe, Mitchell was there to deflect the ball in for the game winner. A surreal feeling for coach
Joanie Milhous, who now sits at 249 career victories.
"It was pure determination," said Milhous reflecting on her captain's performance. "She literally like we have always said gives 110 percent at all times. She was so determined to win that game."
It is the largest comeback victory for Villanova since October 15th, 2005, when the 'Cats came back from down 4-0 to defeat Louisville. Villanova great Megan Foster led the Wildcats to victory that day.
Now in 2023, another Villanova great by the name of Meghan is leading the way. Mitchell's four goals is the most by a Wildcat since Lydia Sydnor scored four against Wagner in 2019.
The Bobcats were led by sisters Lucia and Sophia Pompeo who combined for two goals and an assist.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, September 24
th when they take on Fairfield. Game time is set for 1pm in Fairfield, Conn.
