CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa—Villanova earned its second victory of the season by defeating Longwood 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats controlled the game from start to finish.
Meghan Mitchell led the way for the Villanova attack finishing with two goals and three assists. Mitchell opened the scoring six minutes in by dribbling through the Lancer defense and finishing into the bottom corner. In the second quarter, Mitchell's quick hands led to a deflection and an assist as junior
Emma Schwarz scored her first goal of the season. Then freshman
Maeve Boston found Mitchell open in the arc as she scored her second of the half.
The Wildcats had a 4-0 advantage at halftime as junior
Anne Drabbe's shot found the net courtesy of a penalty corner to close out the second quarter.
Mitchell was proud of how her team rallied together after a tough defeat two days earlier.
"Today we were focused on showing what we were capable of for 60 minutes," said Mitchell. "We were not happy with our play and the result on Friday so today we wanted to come out and show what this team is made of."
The second half was much of the same for the Wildcats. Nearly seven minutes into the third quarter Mitchell found sophomore
Eileen Mazzaro for her first career goal. In the fourth quarter,
Amanda Middleman scored her third goal of the season before freshman
Colleen Finnan scored her first career goal with one second remaining.
Assistant coach
Carrera Lucas was pleased with her teams play today.
"The main goal was to convert on our opportunities in the attacking end because we had those opportunities on Friday, but we just weren't getting the ball in the back of the net," said Lucas. "This was a team effort because it takes a lot culturally and emotionally to bounce back from a game like Friday and have a performance like this."
It was a game filled with milestones as junior goalkeeper
Emma Leppert recorded her first career shutout in a five save performance alongside the first career goals for Mazarro and Finnan. Boston also recorded her first career point with her assist in the first half.
Villanova has now won five consecutive home games dating back to last season. They look to continue their momentum Friday September 8
th vs. Rutgers. Game time is set for 6pm.
