Clayton, Dolan, Langon and Murphy to Compete at NCAA Championships This Weekend

National meet takes place in Boston on Friday and Saturday; action will air live on ESPN+

BOSTON, Mass.—A quartet of Villanova athletes will compete at the 2024 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston this weekend as the last – and biggest – weekend of the indoor track & field season has arrived. Competition takes place on Friday and Saturday at the TRACK at new balance with all of the action to be televised on ESPN+.

The first event of the championships for the Wildcats is the preliminary heats of the men's 800 meters on Friday afternoon. Fifth year collegian Sean Dolan (Ewing, N.J.) will run in the second of two heats at 4:50 p.m.; the top three finishers in each heat and the next two fastest times move on to the final on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. This is the second time that Dolan will compete in the 800 meters at the indoor national championships. Last month at the BIG EAST meet in Chicago, Ill., he became the first athlete in conference history to win three career indoor titles in the men's 800 meters.

Saturday's schedule begins with women's high jump at 1 p.m. and senior Roschell Clayton (Montego Bay, Jamaica) is first in the jumping order. The outright school record holder and this year's BIG EAST champion in the high jump, Clayton tied or set Villanova records in each of her first three performances of the 2024 indoor season. She set the Wildcats absolute record of 1.88 meters at the Eagle Elite Invitational in Boston in the same venue where this weekend's championships will be held. Clayton also set a facility record at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Center at Gately Park when she won the BIG EAST title with a winning mark of 1.85 meters.

Following the final of the 800 meters on Saturday afternoon, senior Liam Murphy (Millstone, N.J.) and sophomore Marco Langon (Raritan, N.J.) race in the men's 3000 meters. They were the top two finishers at the BIG EAST Championships where Murphy set a school record with a winning time of 7:42.51 and Langon followed close behind in 7:43.83 to post the third-fastest time in the Villanova record book. The marks for both Murphy and Langon were well under the previous BIG EAST Championships meet record which had been set two years ago.

The Wildcats rank among the top Division I programs of all-time in terms of scoring team points at the indoor NCAA Championships. On the men's side, Villanova has scored in 47 years since the national indoor meet made its debut in 1965. That is tied for the fourth-highest total among all men's programs. The women have scored in 35 years which is tied for the fifth-highest total since the women's championships began in 1983.

The top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Championships will be named first team All-Americans and the next eight finishers will garner second team All-America honors. Final awards for the indoor track & field season will be announced next week following the conclusion of the NCAA Championships.
