Villanova Loses Shootout Against Bucknell 18-10

LEWISBURG, PA – Runs were not hard to come by today in Lewisburg, Pa. as Bucknell defeated Villanova 18-10 in weekday matchup.
 
For the first five innings of the game, both teams scored in every inning.  After being down 4-2 in the second inning, The Wildcats kept battling back.  In the third Villanova scored two runs to tie the game at 4.  As we saw all day, Bucknell had an answer in the bottom of the innings.  A grounder to the shortstop and a walk gave Bucknell their two-run lead back in the bottom of the third.
 
Villanova was able to battle back with back-to-back RBI doubles by Jack O'Reilly and Dylan Dennis to tie the game at 6-6. Bucknell however, was able to answer two of their own in the bottom of the inning to regain a two-run lead.
 
The game began to get away from The Wildcats in the fifth inning.  After scoring one-run in the top of the inning, Villanova gave up a run on a balk and a grand slam by Sean Keys to blow the game open and give control to Bucknell.
 
Both teams added a few more runs, giving us our final score of 18-10.
 
Nova Notes
  • Seven Wildcats recorded an RBI on the day.  Dylan Dennis was the only player to record multiple.  Dennis went 2-4 with two hit by pitches, a double and two RBI.
  • Jack O'Reilly went 1-3 with two hit by pitches, a double and one RBI.
  • Scott Shaw was hit by one pitch and went 2-3 with a triple and an RBI.
How It Happened
 
  • In the first inning, Jason Neff grounded to the shortstop, Dennis scored from third, 1-0 Villanova.
  • Michael Trommer hit a three-run home run in the first, 3-1 Bucknell.
  • Dennis was hit by pitch in the second, scoring Cam Hassert, 3-2.
  • In the bottom of the second, Brady Karp hit a solo home run, 4-2.
  • A throwing error by the catcher scored Scott Shaw in the third, 4-3.
  • Josue Valdez grounded to second base, Michael Whooley scored, 4-4.
  • In the bottom of the third, Jacob Corson scored on a walk and Trommer scored after a ground out to shortstop, 6-4 Bison.
  • Two one-run doubles in the fourth by O'Reilly and Dennis, scoring AJ Hansen and Dennis to tie the game, 6-6.
  • Sean Keys grounded out to third, Karp scored in the fourth, 7-6.
  • Corson doubled to right field, scoring Billy Kender, 8-6 in the fourth.
  • In the fifth, Shane Solari doubled to left center, Valdez scored, 8-7.
  • Luke Nascimento scored on a balk in the fifth, 9-7.
  • Keys hit a grand slam to right center in the fifth, 13-7.
  • In the sixth O'Reilly scored after Whooley hit a fielder's choice to the second basemen, 13-8.
  • An RBI triple by Voytovich and an RBI single by Tyler Dunn scored two for Bucknell in the seventh, 16-8.
  • In the eighth, Scott Shaw tripled, scoring O'Reilly and Shaw scored on a sac fly by Jason Neff, 16-10.
  • Two RBI doubles by Keys and Corson scored two more in the eighth, 18-10.
