Villanova Loses Thriller In Series Finale Against UConn

STORRS, CT– UConn walks it off in the ninth inning of game three of the series against Villanova, 10-8. The victory on Sunday gives The Huskies the sweep of The Wildcats in Storrs, Connecticut.

Game three of the series went as the previous two games, with UConn getting on the board early.  Three runs in the first inning and another in the third, gave The Huskies a 4-0 lead.

Making his first start of the series, John Whooley got Villanova on the board in the fifth with an RBI single to center that scored Shane Solari to make it 4-1.  UConn looked to be running away with the game after a grand slam by Jake Studley in the sixth ballooned the lead to 8-1, but Villanova did not go away.

In the seventh, Cam Hassert hit a solo home run and J. Whooley recorded another RBI single to bring the score to 8-3. That five-run lead for UConn did not last much longer as Villanova would tie the game by the end of the eighth inning.

Coming off his solo shot the inning prior, Hassert returned to the plate in the eighth with bases loaded down 8-3. The senior delivered again, this time with a single through the right side to score two runs and bring the lead to only 8-5 for UConn. The next batter was Shane Solari, and he answered the call with a one-run RBI of his own. Down 8-6, leadoff hitter Dylan Dennis came to the plate next and tied the game on the first pitch.  A single to left field scored Solari and Hassert to tie the game at eight in the eighth.

Villanova was able to keep the game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth but could not get anything on the board in the top of the ninth.  In the bottom of the ninth, Korey Morton hit a two-run home run to walk to off for UConn, 10-8.
