PLYMOUTH – Villanova drops their conference home opener at Villanova Ballpark to St. John's 13-7.
When you look at the box score you see similar hitting numbers as the Wildcats recorded 12 hits and the Red Storm had 14. The difference came with extra base hits and errors. Six errors by the Wildcats and three home runs by St. John's proved costly for Villanova.
St. John's began the game on hot as they scored in five straight innings leading 9-1 after the top of the fifth inning. However, at the start of the bottom of the fifth the Wildcats began to inch away at the lead. An RBI single and a two RBI double in the fifth gave Villanova some life heading into the sixth inning down 9-4. Good relief pitching helped silence the Red Strom to three straight scoreless innings form the sixth to the eighth.
The Wildcats started to gain momentum adding in two more runs in the sixth from a single to cut the lead to 9-6 and another in the eighth to make it 9-7. That door closed quickly as timely hitting and multiple errors in the ninth cost Villanova to give up for more runs in the ninth. Saint John's held on to win the game 13-7.
