PLYMOUTH – Villanova fell in 13 innings in game three of their series against St. John's 3-1.
It took 13 innings for the winner to be crowned in the series finale between the Wildcats and the Red Storm. The pitching staffs for both teams dominated the day as the scoreless tie held until the 13th inning. The two teams combined for 28 strikeouts and each had seven pitchers appear.
Offensively the numbers were similar, Villanova had 10 hits on the day while St John's had eight. The biggest stat of the day was the amount of batters left on base. A combined 35 batters were left on base (20 by Villanova) which contributed to the 0-0 draw through 12 innings.
Both teams had their chances along the way to end the game. The WIldcats story includes a base loaded two out situation in the bottom of the 10th inning. With a full count,
AJ Hansen was called for a third strike on a controversial call that left Villanova shocked. A walk off home run attempt by
Michael Whooley was just a few feet away from being fair in the 11th.
In the 13th inning runs were finally scored as a single up the middle for St. Johns scored the game winner. After giving up three runs in the top of the 13th, Villanova did not do enough to answer, losing 3-1.
Nova Notes
- Luke McCollough started the game for the Wildcats and pitched well. McCollough pitched 5.1 innings allowing only two hits, no runs and striking out three.
- A plethora of Villanova pitchers made an appearance in relief. All six did not allow more than two hits in their appearances.
- Scott Shaw recorded two extra base hits and was 3-7 on the day with those two doubles.
- Both Cam Hassert and Michael Whooley recorded two hits and a hit by pitch on four plate appearances. Whooley was also the lone Wildcats to record an RBI.
