PLYMOUTH MEETING– Villanova hit three home runs on the day, but 17 hits by Iona helped lead them to a 10-6 victory in game one at Villanova ballpark.
The first two innings of the game saw both teams scoreless with great pitching. That trend of pitching continued for Iona, but not for Villanova. A plethora of singles and an error allowed the Gaels to add four runs in the third inning. In the top of the fourth, Iona added another run after Josiah Ragsdale hit a solo home run into left field.
Villanova's first hit did not come until the bottom of the fourth inning. The first hit came from Cam Hassert who hit a solo home run into center field, his third game in a row with a home run.
Jason Neff came up after Hassert and recorded the second hit for The Wildcats. His hit was another solo shot to left to cut the lead to 5-2 for The Gaels.
Iona scored in three straight innings after a double down the line in the fifth, scored a runner to take the lead to 6-2. As it has been over the past week, Hassert answered for Villanova with another home run in the fifth. This one was a two-run shot to right field, bringing it to a two-run game.
Another one-run inning in the sixth by The Gaels brought their lead back up to three runs and a run recorded in four straight innings.
The seventh inning for both teams was quiet as no runs came across. In the eighth however, that was different. Iona was able to score three runs in the top of the inning including an RBI-triple by Josiah Ragsdale giving him the cycle on the day. This big inning by The Gaels took their lead to 10-4.
A late push by Villanova started in the eighth from a two-RBI double by
Shane Solari to cut the lead to 10-6. Hassert hit a single through the right side in the ninth bringing around
AJ Hansen to bring it to 10-7. The Wildcats had chances to tie the game but left three stranded in the ninth, losing 10-7.
