CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – The Villanova field hockey team fell to Drexel on Friday night (Sept. 6), 3-2, at the Conshohocken Proving Grounds. Sophomores
Gemma Lysaght and
Colleen Finnan each scored their first goals of the season in the loss.
The Dragons (2-1) got on the board early, with forward Marti Sanabria scoring a goal for Drexel just 19 seconds into the game.
Villanova (1-2) soon answered with a goal by Lysaght at the 4:38 mark in the first quarter. She received the ball from
Emma Schwarz and
Ava Borkowski off of a penalty corner before ripping a shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Despite the Wildcats putting two shots on goal, both teams were held scoreless in the second quarter, keeping the score knotted at one at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Finnan deflected a shot from
Anne Drabbe into the net to give the Blue and White a 2-1 lead.
Alexandria Lavelle, who inserted the penalty corner, was also credited with an assist.
In the fourth quarter, Drexel took advantage of a VU yellow card with a goal by Anna Castaldo to even the score at 2-2 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.
The Dragons kept the pressure on the Wildcats throughout the fourth quarter, posting 11 shots (six on goal) and drawing six corners in the final period.
With just over six minutes to play, Castaldo deflected a shot from a penalty corner into the net, giving Drexel a 3-2 lead.
The Wildcats pulled goalkeeper
Maddi Sears and drew a green card on the Dragons in the final four minutes to have a two-player advantage down the stretch, but the Blue and White could not convert and fell to Drexel, 3-2.
Sears made seven saves but will fall to 1-2 on the season, while Drexel goalie Halle Geiger improves to 2-1 after making four saves.
Up next, Villanova will host Mercyhurst on Monday (Sept. 9) at the Conshohocken Proving Grounds to round out a three-game homestand. The game will start at 5 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on FloSports.
