Villanova Picks Up First Victory at Connecticut Since 2010 With Four-Set Saturday W

Team totals most blocks of the season as Abby Harrell leads 'Cats with a 20-kill double-double

STORRS, Conn. – For the first time since 2010, Villanova volleyball comes home from Storrs victorious as the Wildcats took down Connecticut in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24) on Saturday night at the UConn Volleyball Center.

It's UConn's first loss at home this season (10-0 prior to tonight) and just their second in the last two years (14-1 last season), while Villanova gets its first victory at the home of the Huskies since September 26, 2010.

It was the fifth 20-plus kill output of the season for Abby Harrell who contributed a double-double for Villanova (15-4, 6-2 BIG EAST) with a match-high in kills (20) in addition to 10 digs and two aces to cross 100 for her career.

Cat Young added 12 terminations on a team-best .296 hitting for the Wildcats, Ava Harris paced the 'Cats with 24 assists in addition to a pair of service aces and Lola Buck-Taylor tied a game-high on 12 digs.

As a team it was the most blocks of the season for Villanova (15), led by a match-best seven from Campbell McKinnon in addition to five from Ava Mehrten and four for Reagan McGivern.

"That's a great win for us on the road," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "It's good to have Cat back, she gave us a huge lift tonight. Marikate Ritterbusch was outstanding in serve receive and we made plays when we needed to."

It was a remarkably even start to the match with nine ties up through the media timeout and neither squad's edge advancing past two points up until Villanova took seven of the final eight scores to capture the opener 25-22.

Connecticut used 4-0 and 3-0 stretches to go ahead 13-8 in the second, but the 'Cats steadily chipped away and managed to tie it at 18 apiece. UConn got an advantage at 23-22 to prompt a VU pause, but Villanova snatched the last three points of the period to grab a 25-23 victory and a two set edge.

The Huskies stacked points together to open up a three-point lead early in the third, but the Wildcats took five of the next six to lead by one at the media timeout. Connecticut got a two-score edge back and finished out the frame with just enough points to extend the match, winning it 25-23.

Set four saw runs from both squads with Villanova's longest being eight before UConn's six in a row tied the match at 22-all. The Huskies got two more to put the 'Cats down at set point, but VU fended that off and took the next two scores to finish off the frame at 26-24 and the match as a Wildcat win.

The victory moves the 'Cats to 25-16 all-time opposite the Huskies and gives Villanova two in a row over Connecticut.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats return home next weekend for a pair of home matches, preparing to host DePaul and Marquette in evening contests on both Friday and Saturday.
