PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Villanova field hockey team fell on the road at Drexel, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday, October 19.
Neither team was able to find a groove offensively in the opening 15 minutes. Both teams took turns possessing the ball, but neither team was able to seize the momentum. The Dragons were able to get off three shots in the opening frame, but none were on goal. The score was deadlocked at zero heading into the second period.
In the second, both offenses were able to move the ball and look to attack. Each team tallied three shots with one on goal.
Ava Borkowski had the chance for the 'Cats off a penalty corner, but the Dragons' goalkeeper was able to keep it out of the cage. Villanova forced three corners in the period but could not convert on any. Drexel made the most of their opportunities as they converted on their penalty corner at the six-minute mark of the period. That gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead heading into the break
The third period saw the 'Cats finally get on the board. Junior
Colleen Finnan scored her fifth goal of the season off a nice pass from
Maeve Boston and
Molly Zimmerman. That tied the game at one with eight minutes left in the third. The third also saw freshman
Sophie Volkel swat away three shots to preserve the tie as the game headed into the final frame. The fourth did not see much action as both defenses stiffened. Drexel tallied the only shot in the period and could not get it on goal. The game needed an extra period to determine a winner.
The overtime period did not last long. Drexel ended the game about four minutes into play thanks to a penalty corner to walk away with a 2-1 overtime win.
