Wildcats Return to New England to Face Providence Friday

Nova looking to build on an exciting 2-1 win at UConn last time out

VILLANOVA, Pa. – A small strategic tweak showed up in a big way when Villanova needed it most last Saturday night in Storrs, Conn.

Following a dry spell on set pieces that saw the Wildcats shut out four times in a five-game span, head coach Mark Fetrow and his staff, including associate head coach Alex Balog and assistant coach Josh West, made a move towards something that had worked earlier in the season.

"You try to change it up because every team we play scouts us so well," said Fetrow. "For a time there, we had gone to more short corner (kicks) but we decided let's go back to what had worked so well for us early in the season. Loft the ball into the box and have the guys go win some battles in the air."

Trailing 1-0 against No. 22 UConn on the road, the Wildcats were pressing forward seeking an equalizer when they earned a corner kick. Graduate student Michael teDuits lofted a perfect corner kick that Brody Crampton was able to re-direct into the goal. Just 1:25 later, sophomore back Lorenzo Avalas won a ball in the air and sent it into the net to give Nova its first BIG EAST win since 2023.

"We have set lofty goals for ourselves," said Fetrow. "We want to compete for a Big East championship. To do that, we need to qualify for the (four team) playoffs. We have four points in our first two matches (including a 1-1 draw against DePaul on Sept. 19), which is a good start. But if we want to get where we want to go, we have to take care of every detail and execute the game plan as well as we did last weekend."

The next opportunity for the Wildcats (3-3-3 overall, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) arrives Friday when Villanova makes a return visit to New England, this time to meet Providence at 3 p.m. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. This match is part of Homecoming Weekend at Providence and will be streamed via Friars Live.

Providence posted an impressive win of its own last Saturday, downing Xavier 3-1 in Cincinnati. Through eight games the Friars have outshot opponents 116-84 and own a 53-29 edge in corner kicks over their foes.

Last season, the Friars posted a 1-0 win over the Wildcats at the Higgins Soccer Complex. In 2023, Villanova earned a 4-3 triumph at Providence. The Friars lead the all-time series 18-10-4.

This game concludes a run of three straight away from home for Villanova. It returns to its Higgins Soccer Complex home turf on Tuesday to host NJIT at 3 p.m. (ESPN+) in non-league action, the first of four in a row at home.
