VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova volleyball kept up its hot streak to start the season, sweeping the Butler Bulldogs in straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-15) in front of over 600 fans at Jake Nevin Field House on Friday night to move to 3-0 in conference play.
Abby Harrell put forth a match-high 13 kills for Villanova (12-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) while Campbell McKinnon added 10 terminations and a career-high four service aces.
Reagan McGivern contributed a match-best seven blocks on the night in addition to seven kills on game-high .778 hitting as fellow freshman Ava Harris led the team with 19 assists.
"That's a good win against a good BIG EAST team, it was a great crowd and the band was awesome," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "I'm proud of how we stepped up tonight. Our fight to come back in the second was impressive, and Campbell had a great service run in the third that gave us the spark we needed."
The first frame went the Wildcats' way thanks to a number of prolonged runs, using 6-0, 4-0 and 5-2 stretches to topple the Bulldogs 25-19 in the opening stanza.
Butler steadily built up a lead in the second by way of three different three-point strings, but six straight from the Wildcats gave the home side a 20-19 advantage and forced a BU timeout. The visitors took three in a row again to lead 23-21, but Villanova ended the period with four straight to win 25-23 and go up two sets to none.
The Wildcats used a five-point service run from McKinnon to vault ahead 9-5 in the third, never looking back from that point on and taking nine of the final 11 points of the evening to wrap up the match as a sweep.
Villanova draws even in the all-time series with the victory, moving to 12-12 historically with wins in 10 of the last 12 contests opposite the Bulldogs.
