VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Following one of the top years in program history, a Villanova volleyball staff member is moving on up as
Joe Portland is being promoted to associate head coach, announced Wednesday by head coach
Josh Steinbach.
"What we hope to have here at Villanova is a staff that is always evolving and learning, and Joe is a perfect example of that," Steinbach said. "He works relentlessly and is a habitual learner, so I know he'll be better each season. I'm happy to have him on our side and this promotion is well deserved."
Portland recently wrapped up his fifth season with the Wildcats, joining the staff as a volunteer assistant in 2021 before being promoted to full-time in the spring of 2022.
"I'd like to thank
Eric Roedl,
Lynn Tighe,
Brian Murray and Josh for giving me the opportunity to work with our fantastic student-athletes," Portland said. "I'm excited to see what the future holds for Villanova volleyball."
With the Wildcats, Portland currently serves as the offensive coordinator, spearheading the attacking efforts in addition to handling logistics for travel and meals.Â
In his time at Villanova, Portland has developed a quartet of all-conference selections. Portland's first full-time season on staff saw Kiera Booth earn an All-BIG EAST and All-ECAC First Team nod. Most recently, Portland has overseen the development of
Abby Harrell from a BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2023 to a First Team All-East Coast Region as a junior. He also mentored two all-conference middles in 2025, guiding
Campbell McKinnon to a unanimous all-league nod and
Reagan McGivern to the All-Freshman Team.
Portland and the Wildcats will get back to the court next fall, looking to return to the BIG EAST Tournament for a fourth straight season.
