NEW YORK – Graduate student faceoff specialist
Tyler Sandoval was announced as BIG EAST Specialist of the Week, and junior defender
Jack Shoemaker was nominated to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday.
Sandoval's 15-19 (.789%) performance in the circle is the best by a Wildcat with at least 10 attempts in a single game since
Justin Coppola went 20 for 22 (.909%) against St. John's on March 14, 2021.
This performance brings his season average up to (.630%). He ranks 12
th in the country and second in the BIG EAST in faceoff win percentage after winning 54 of his 74 faceoffs taken so far in the young season.
The graduate student recorded his highest win rate since May 14, 2022, against Boston University when he went 15-18 (.833) against the Terriers.
Shoemaker is quickly making his way up in the record book for caused turnovers in a career, as he is now tied for 13
th alongside teammate
Tripp Robinson and 2014 Villanova graduate Chris Piccirilli with 40 after totaling three against Colgate.
The junior is very well in reach of sneaking into the top 10 in program history over the next coming weeks with a year and a half still to play in his career.
He scooped up two ground balls in addition to the turnovers he caused against the Raiders. Shoemaker leads the Wildcats with six caused turnovers through three games.
He is 20
th in the nation in caused turnovers per game at 2.00 and second in the conference.
This is the California native's second career weekly award, after he earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod last season after tallying three caused turnovers and picking up four ground balls against Colgate on February 24, 2024.
