Water Polo Dominates Against McKendree

Layla Canales scored a career-high five goals in the win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Villanova Women's Water Polo extended their win streak to five games as they defeated the McKendree Bearcats by a score of 13-4 in a well-rounded team win.

Layla Canales scored a career-high five goals in the match against the Bearcats. Riley Hull and Adrienne Grimes also netted multiple goals with three and two, respectively.

Villanova started off the scoring as Canales found the back of the net just two minutes into the contest. She then added on another after scoring on a 5M attempt.

Hull finished off the Wildcat scoring in the first, cashing in with a minute to play.

McKendree scored as time wound down to chip at the early Villanova start, but it would prove to be a tough task for the Bearcats to continue an offensive attack.

VU picked up five goals in the second quarter, as Canales tallied her third and fourth. Hull and Mallory answered McKendree goals, but Coco Jones extended the Villanova lead to five as she scored with 0:07 remaining in the half.

Jones' goal was her first time finding the back of the net since the Wildcats played Iona at home on January 25.

The Wildcats entered halftime with an 8-3 advantage and only expounded on that in the third stanza, holding the Bearcats to just one goal as they added three.

Grimes scored her first goal of the tournament in the third and followed it up as time expired for her second of the day.

Gracin Kerry added on to her outstanding weekend, saving nine shots, including a 5M attempt. She also contributed one of the Wildcats 12 steals.

Rachel Stephens relieved Kerry in the fourth quarter and did not allow a goal while making three saves and recording a steal.

McKendree shot 4/27 (.148%), including going 0-5 on the power play, as they were absolutely stifled by the Wildcat defense.

On the specialist side, the Wildcats won all four of their sprints, and four different players tallied a field block.
