VILLANOVA, Pa. – A pair of key midfielders for the Villanova Wildcats are going to be teammates again, this time with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL Championship).
Jason Bouregy and
Jorge Garcia recently signed one-year contracts with the Riverhounds, where they will begin their professional careers.
Bouregy was a first team All-BIG EAST selection last fall for the Wildcats, leading Nova with 16 points, that included four goals and eight assists. The Paramus, N.J., native arrived at Villanova last summer as a graduate transfer from Rutgers, having earned second team All-Big Ten recognition in 2022.
Garcia, who hails from Lawrenceville, Ga., played five seasons for the Wildcats and registered five goals in his graduate season last fall. He also added a pair of assists.
"I am extremely happy for
Jason Bouregy and
Jorge Garcia for signing their first professional contracts with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds," said Villanova head coach
Mark Fetrow. "The Riverhounds have a strong history of winning at the USL Championship level and both Jason and Jorge will benefit from their competitive environment.
"I had the pleasure of working with Jorge since his freshman year (2020). Jorge has always been a special technical player with a high soccer IQ. His ability to manipulate the ball in tight spaces as well as display consistent range of pass has made him an effective CM in the Big East. Jorge has grown a lot over his five seasons at Villanova including leading the team as one of the captains in his senior campaign.
"Jason joined our team as a grad school transfer from Rutgers this past fall. Jason had one goal in mind when deciding where he was going to compete during his last year of eligibility, somewhere that would prepare him to become a pro. Jason's attitude and effort on the field was unmatched and his love for the game was always apparent. Jason quickly enhanced our 2024 team with his ability to brake pressure and produce in the final third.
"I look forward to tracking both Jorge and Jason's professional careers and am happy to see them starting this journey together in Pittsburgh."
In announcing the signings Riverhounds head coach Bob Lilley said: "Jason is a quick, dynamic winger who works on both sides of the ball. With his technical ability, he will cause problems for defenders in our league.
"Jorge has exceptional awareness and technical quality in attacking situations. He can pick out a pass, and he finishes at a high level. We liked him and Jason at our January combine, and they have grown quickly in our group."
The Riverhounds are set to open the 2025 season this Saturday at North Carolina FC.
