LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jake Melchionni was named to the USILA Team of the Week for the week of April 14 for his performance in the Wildcats' win over St. John's last Saturday.
He caused three turnovers and grabbed seven ground balls in the game, matching career highs in both statistics that he set earlier this season during his breakout sophomore campaign.
Since Melchionni has entered the starting lineup against Providence, he has forced a combined six turnovers and picked up 10 ground balls.
With his three forced turnovers against the Red Storm, he brought himself just outside the top 20 for caused turnovers in a single season in program history. If he maintains his average of 1.70 per game over the next two games, he will place within the top 16, helping commemorate his standout season in the record books.
He is currently second in the BIG EAST behind Georgetown's Robert Plath and slots in at 24
th nationally for caused turnovers per game with 1.70. He is also second in ground balls across BIG EAST competition over the last three games with 16, behind only
Beau Kemler.
Melchionni is the first player to earn the nod from the USILA since
Stephen Zupicich did so for the week of March 13, 2024.
