Whooley Extends Hitting Streak as Baseball Falls to Xavier

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – A two-out double extended shortstop Michael Whooley's hitting streak to a career-high 11 games, however the Villanova University baseball team fell to Xavier, 10-2, on Friday (April 18) at Villanova Ballpark.

Whooley's streak dates back to March 29 (vs. LIU), and is the longest hitting streak by any Wildcat this season. Meanwhile, Austin Lemon posted three hits and an RBI on the afternoon for his third multi-hit performance in his last five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Musketeers (22-18, 7-4 BIG EAST) took a two-run lead in the first two innings with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run.

Then, after a pair of scoreless innings, Xavier put together a five-run fifth frame behind a three-run home run by Clay Burdette. The Wildcats (19-16, 4-4 BIG EAST) fell behind, 7-0.

Xavier tacked on three more runs before the bottom of the eighth inning, using a pair of sacrifice flies and a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth, Villanova finally got on the board with two runs. Tyler Shaw's walk was followed by a double by Josue Valdez, putting runners on second and third with one out. A wild pitch scored Shaw from third and advance Valdez, who then came home on a ground out by Lemon.

The short-lived spurt was not enough, as Xavier claimed the 10-2 win after a scoreless ninth inning. Xavier starter Ben Weber earned the win to improve to 4-2 on the season, while Villanova starter Luke McCollough fell to the same record with the loss.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • With a single in the second inning, second baseman Brayden Leonard tallied his ninth hit in Villanova's last three games.
  • Sophomore Avery Schwartz made his career debut in the ninth inning. He posted three strikeouts with one hit and two walks in a full inning of work.
