PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova University baseball team dropped its series finale against Xavier, 5-2, on Saturday (April 19) at Villanova Ballpark.
Austin Lemon and
John Freitag led the way with two hits each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were held scoreless throughout the first two innings. In the top of the third, Xavier (22-18, 8-4 BIG EAST) got on the board with an RBI single from Carter Hendrickson. The Wildcats (19-17, 4-5 BIG EAST) immediately answered in the bottom of the third, tying the game with an RBI double by
John Freitag that just escaped the glove of Hendrickson in left field.
The starting pitchers bounced back in the fourth, setting both teams down in order. In the top of the fifth, Xavier retook the lead with a solo home run to right field by Jason Jelic.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lemon tied the game at two runs apiece with a bases loaded groundout.
Alec Sachais threw two strong innings in relief before giving up the go-ahead three-run home run to Isaac Wachsmann in the top of the ninth inning.
The Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to score, sealing the 5-2 win for Xavier. Xavier reliever Jake Hooker improved to 3-6 with the win, while the Musketeers starting third baseman Jake Lambdin earned his third save of the season. Sachais fell to 4-3 with the loss.

The Wildcats will host Bucknell on Tuesday (April 22) at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. First pitch is scheduled for 3:25 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on FloSports.
