EDISON, N.J. – Women's Water Polo earned a team record by receiving five individual awards for their performances in the pool during a historic season, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced Wednesday.
Ella Mattocks and
Riley Hull were named to the All-MAAC Second Team, becoming the first duo to earn those honors since 2014. Mattocks, a junior from Shutesbury, Mass., continued her run as one of the most effective players on both sides of the ball for the 'Cats, scoring 41 goals, passing out 17 assists, and drawing 56 exclusions on the season. She scored her 100th career goal against La Salle, becoming the second active Wildcat to reach the century mark. Her 144 exclusions place her sixth in program history with a season still to go, which places her among some of the best offensive players in program history.
Hull was also named the first MAAC Rookie of the Year in team history. She broke the record for most goals in a season by a freshman, breaking the mark of 76, set in 2019 by current assistant coach
Kaysie Stuba. She totaled 114 points on 78 goals and 36 assists during the regular season. Hull is tied for sixth for most exclusions drawn in a season with 65, as well as ranking within the top 10 in sprints won with 41.
Senior Center D
Adrienne Grimes was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. She is the first to earn this honor since Julie Conrath in 2016. The Houston, Texas, native recorded 16 steals and 16 field blocks during the season in her valiant return from a missed season due to a shoulder injury. Grimes was a key communicator and force on the defensive end while also adding 25 assists on the other side of the field.
In his second season as the head coach of Villanova University Women's Water Polo,
Michael Gordon has been named the MAAC Coach of the Year. He is the first in program history to win the award outright and the first to earn the honor since 2004. Gordon has amassed 41 wins in two seasons and is 18-1 at the Villanova Swim Complex during his tenure. This season, he helped the team go 20-11, recording their first back-to-back 20-win seasons in team history and scoring a team record of 431 goals and counting. Gordon was able to lead the team to a postseason berth in the 2025 MAAC Water Polo Championship for the first time since 2016 and recorded two ranked wins on the season. His squad became the first to be ranked in either the CWPA or the ACWPC National Polls as they earned that honor four times this season.
